I never asked to be enthralled
It’s not a question after all
I’d ask of one who filled the role
Of wisdom’s window to my soul
Whose spark of beauty lights my heart
With tender feelings kept apart
From seasoned caution’s whispered truth
The gained experience of youth
Whose charms delight my every day
Whose memory I push away
I long to soar to higher heights
My spirit beckons me to flight
But I’m a prisoner to love’s grace
And the compassion on a face
For every time love’s fetters cheered
I vowed to share my hopes and feared
I sought the truth from which to learn
And I was willing to be spurned
And now I know that love’s to blame
For keeping hearts in heaven’s chains
You won’t convince me to believe
That beauty sets the spirit free
