Extend to me a blushing rose
I’ll chart with art its sunlit pose
Depicting it in splendor fair
I draw my lines with studied care
To praise in pencil truth’s aplomb
And time’s departure swift postpone
To render color black and white
A keener vision to excite
In love with living’s light and shade
In love with all my yesterdays
Yet pondering my pain the while
A thought of fortune reconciled
Now marveling at seasons past
Remembering a kinder cast
And contemplating now my fate
Anticipating what awaits
While knowing that the rose will die
While knowing that I know not why
I ask indeed, why must we die?
I know not why, oh no not I
